Decorating for a Sesame Street Birthday party is about setting the mood for an imagination driven experience that kids of many ages will appreciate. It's all the little details, you know the ones that take time to think about, that will really bring the room to life.

Rule #1: Make a plan BEFORE the big day to allow time for changes, additions, and shopping!

The colors of a Sesame Street theme party are primary colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange. Bringing these bold fun colors into the space in a mixed pattern can add that POW! every birthday party needs to capture the minds of guests.

These are the basic things you can use to bring primary colors into the room. Mix them up as you please. Remember that this party is being planned to wow little ones so think creatively. The smallest things that adults just don't seem to care for will drive young party-goers nuts!

Once you have the basics together you can start thinking about all the little things that can make a BIG difference in the mood.

Print out and color all or favorite Sesame Street characters. You can print them out poster size to be taped together or just regular printer paper size to do an enormous collage on the wall. Alternatively, you can buy removable sesame street wall decorations which can really make the room pop! Either way these are sure to be a hit!

Use plastic table cloths to cover dining chairs and make a BIRTHDAY BOY or BIRTHDAY GIRL throne. You can also attach streamers and balloons to the chairs to POP! in some color.

Incorporate your gifts into the decoration! In a lot of ways, the cake and presents are what represents the birthday party so show them off together and in a bold way. Lots of ribbons, bows, and color will work to set a partying mood.

If your at home put on a movie (maybe Follow That Bird), or at a facility pop in a kid friendly CD to set some background sound up. This helps to ease tension if children are shy, gives everyone (even adults) something to talk about, and might even entertain the kids while you finish last minute preparations.

Set up all the games before the party starts. This sets the tone and gives guests something to anticipate. Everyone will be ready to participate when game time comes, after all, they have been asking for half an hour.

Don't forget to ask the lucky birthday angel if they have ideas or requests. They may know more about creating a creative imagination filled event than you do!
